General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, and provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined with basic clinical duties, helping to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients' experience in the surgery

General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, and provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined with basic clinical duties, helping to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients' experience in the surgery. To regularise the role and training needed for GPAs, a national framework has been developed built around five domains: Care; Administration; Clinical; Communications; Managing Health Records.

GPA Training

SELWDH is leading on the delivery of the GPA training across London. The courses are accredited by the University of Greenwich.

There are two routes to becoming a GPA:

  1. A 20 credit module at level 4 involving remote on-line face to face taught delivery and submission of portfolio and two pieces of reflective writing.
  2. A 10 credit module at level 4 involving Independent self-directed learning and submission of a portfolio.

Apply

Individuals currently employed in a GP practice across London who are interested in becoming a GP assistant. You will need the support of your employer and an identified GP educator. You will ideally have completed the Care Certificate and possess level 2 functional skills.
